It's about damn time.
After an abbreviated indoor season which saw him break his ankle at a practice (yes, literally), and a frustratingly slow start to his outdoor season as a result, Will Shahbazian finally broke though with a 4:59h mile at a dual meet vs. Central Catholic. He has since run 4:29.02.

HS bucket list
In his only mile of the season, and last ever as a high schooler, Oliver Pawelek snuck under the 5 minute mark with a 4:59.80 at BU, exactly one year to the date of Max's breakthrough mark. He had previously come oh-so-close with a mark of 5:00.53. He now owns a 1500 conversion of 4:36.

The return
The pandemic halted first-time sub-fives for over a year, but in his first track race back, Matthew "Matt" Serrano, previously known more for his XC/2-mile capabilities, dropped down in distance and smashed through the barrier, running a cool 4:57h. He now has a 4:47h to his name.

The DJ's got us falling in love
One week after Serrano earned his mark, Daniel Joseph "D.J." Walsh absolutely annilihated 5 minutes, IN HIS FIRST MILE RACE EVER. He stopped the clock at a jaw-dropping time of 4:48h. He ran 4:29.02 in college, tying Will's PR down to the hundreth.

Prepare for trouble...
Like most siblings, Cameron and Colin Kirn have always seemed to have a friendly rivalry between them. Knowing Cam first broke five his sophomore winter season, Colin wanted to achieve the same feat. And in his final "indoor" race of the season, he did just that, running 4:53.67. He has a 1500 conversion of about 4:20.

...and make it double!
But wait, there's more! For the first time (in recent memory), TWO Andover athletes ran their first sub-five mile in the same race! Patrick "Pat" McCarthy pulled through and stopped the clock at 4:57.15. His "official" PR is now 4:49.6h, but reliable witnesses swear he threw down ~4:47 with a possibly falty timing system.

What's XC szn???
Although most runners in the Bay State were still solely focused on the trails, Michael "Mike" Brown bucked that trend by partaking in a time trial in early November. And he ran very well, smashing sub-five with a 4:57h clocking. He has a 1500 conversion of 4:23.

A long awaited reunion
The BU indoor track is the site of the world record indoor mile. A lot of @therunboys have achieved their sub-fives there. In the first trip back in two years for AHS, Noah Parsons continued that tradition, stopping the clock at 4:57.69. (Niiice.)

Starting the new year off right
If there's anything we learned in the last year, it's that two first-time sub-fives are better than one! Theodore "Teddy" Salamone followed Noah to the line, crossing at 4:58.03. This means the last six sub-fives have come in pairs. He has a 1500 conversion of 4:36.

Better late than never
A trying senior year meant Charles "Charlie" "The Chunk" Beams (@charlie.beams) was unable to graduate AHS with a sub-five under his belt. No matter. In his first collegiate mile, he easily achieved the feat with a flat track 4:56.83. He now has a 4:37.53. (Don't click on this photo. You have been warned.)

Lucky 13th
Guess how many first time sub-5s were run in this race?!? (Hint: click here)
It was only a matter of time before Ryan was added to this list, having run 5:00.16 indoors, not to mention a 10:08 2-mile. He now has a 4:38.14. (Get well soon, my guy!)

Two's company
If you actually clicked on that link in the previous paragraph, this shouldn't surprise you. Joining Ryan in the exclusive club was Peter, who went from a 5:04 at the end of indoor all the way to a nice time of 4:56h. He has a 1500 conversion of about 4:18.

The precocious one
Most people here were not able to experience the sub-five taste while still underclassmen. Then again, August Rudolph isn't merely "most people". The first AHS visit to the New Balance facility brought the first indoor Andover sub-five in years, with the final mark being 4:59.52 (with a crazy 32.02 last lap!) He now has a 4:40.14.

Reggie air, don't care
Somehow, no one in at least five years had broken five for the first time at "The Reggie". Notorious for its borderline unbreathable oxygen atoms, Kyle Haskell flipped the script by delivering a breathtaking performance of 4:59.78. (Oh, he was also just a sophomore btw.) He now has a 4:13.84!

Super Sophomore x3
Worlds collided during indoor when Will met James "Jed" Gallaudet, who happened to be the older brother of one of his favorite campers at Brooks. Jed proved to be so much more than just a crazy coincidence: he's a crazy good runner too. After mostly focusing on the 1K indoors, he smoked his first sub-five in the first outdoor meet, and anchored a DMR in 4.22.72.

The early bird gets the sub-five
As Mike and Kyran will attest, there's no better feeling than to finish off your senior XC season with your first sub-five. Robert Kenny followed up a strong cross campaign by joining the group with a 4:59.7h. His current PR is 4:54.27.

Phreshman Phenom
It only took seven years, but Andover High finally produced another indoor freshman sub-five! Landon Zoss left no doubt, winning his heat by over seven seconds and blazing to a 4:52.06. Unofficially an AHS indoor 9th grade record! Current PR is now 4:22.53.

Family Ties
In the words of the immortal Colin Kirn, "the hell are they feeding freshman (sic) these days". Jed's other younger brother, Charles "Charlie" Gallaudet, joined Landon in the exclusive ninth grade sub-five club, running 4:56.39. He now has a 4:31.19.
January 24, 2024 (Reggie Lewis Center)
A matter of time
Ben Falk's athletic.net page had four consecutive miles with times of 5:04, 5:03, 5:01, and 5:00. It was a matter of when, not if, he would break five. It's always great to see multiple first-timers in the same race, and he followed Charlie to the line with a 4:56.64. He now has a 4:45.12.

Super Sibs
Continuing with the recent theme of siblings both making this website, Enda Stubler wasted no time in hitting a 4:59h in the spring 2024 time trial. He and Peter join the Kirns and Gallaudets in runboys immortality, although they are the only ones who achieved their first-time marks outdoors. He now has a 4:43.2h ( ̶U̶p̶d̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶p̶i̶c̶t̶u̶r̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶s̶o̶o̶n̶!̶)

Zen Zain
Another commonly occurring theme has been those with a soccer background experiencing considerable success in distance running. Well, Zain Shah, yet another super-frosh, was no exception. In his first ever mile, he absolutely destroyed the barrier, hitting 4:44.06. He now owns a 4:33.72.

Noah "Drake Maye" Draper
Throughout the 2025 outdoor season, we saw Noah Draper and Alex Hoffenburg battle it out for the fastest mile. Just like his hero Drake Maye, Noah refused to accept defeat. He demolished the 5 minute barrier with a 4:55.8 mile, winning the battle...for now...

Could YOU be the next sub-five miler?
With Coach Kiley seemingly cranking out studs left and right, the next sub-five miler seems to always be just around the corner. Will YOU be the one to rise to the occasion?
